Justice in Her Own Hands

Yet another article about India…

It looks like some Indian women have given up on the judicial system and started to take justice into their own hands.  Wear a Pink Sari and Carry a Big Stick on Slate.com describes the rise of the gulabi, called the pink gang for their pink sari uniform.  These women stand together to defeat domestic violence one abuser at a time.  They are known to show up at the homes of abusers with bamboo sticks and “convince” him to cease his abuse.

You may remember a similar story in Half the Sky about Usha Narayane (p. 48-53).  She organized a group of women to surround and stab Akku Yadev, a serial rapist and all around bad guy, during a court appearance after the police refused to prosecute him.

That story really stuck with me, as this Slate article does.  While I applaud these women for their sisterhood and for standing up for themselves, it is so terrible that they would be put in this position.  How awful that good, honest women are forced to beat or kill people just to live a decent life!
